Across many African communities, the complexity and craftsmanship of a person’s markings reflected honour, strength, and belonging. In this collection, we translate those markings into modern-day expressions through bold digital prints and graphic storytelling that spotlight iconic African women with these ceremonial designs.
LOOK1 : A TRIBUTE IN TRADITION AND TRANSFORMATION
This opening look is a bold interplay between Zulu heritage and the contemporary South African woman. The traditionally pleated isidwaba, usually worn around the waist, is reinterpreted as a shoulder wrap—honouring its origins while embracing modern styling. A beaded rainbow isicholo-inspired headband completes the look, echoing the vibrant beadwork of the skirt and symbolising celebration, connection and pride. This ensemble is a heartfelt tribute to creative director Kuhle Phumzile Zondo’s mother, referencing the garments she would wear to traditional Zulu gatherings. Anchored in memory and identity, the look sets the tone for the collection: a vivid expression of culture, preservation and love, communicated through powerful colour and graphic detail.
LOOK 2: HERITAGE REWORKED
Ideal for a Summer’s Day, this look continues the dialogue between tradition and modernity. A hand-crocheted top is paired with a contemporary take on the traditional pleated skirt—now reimagined with bold graphic prints and a mix of knife and accordion pleats that create fluid movement and structure. The printed scarf adds a touch of effortless sophistication, perfect for a laid-back vineyard afternoon or a summer’s day out with friends. This ensemble speaks to the evolution of cultural dress, where heritage techniques meet modern silhouettes, textures, and colours to capture both comfort and identity.
LOOK 3: ROOTED STREET HERITAGE
This elegant pleated shirt and bodysuit set brings African-inspired print to life in a silhouette that’s both bold and wearable. Styled with a black cap and satin scarf worn on the head, it transforms into a striking streetwear look that merges tradition with trend.

A bold fusion of heritage and movement. These sleek, high-waisted black gym pants feature a striking graphic print inspired by African body markings. Crafted from flexible spandex, they sculpt and support while honouring rhythm without compromising on culture.

LOOK 5: UBUSO BAKHO
The bold front graphic draws attention to lips and facial markings, referencing African identity and the power of self-expression. These symbolic elements speak to heritage and individuality, using line and form to honour cultural beauty rituals and the stories carried on the face. The designer sought out to bring attention to the facial markings in a look that is easily translatable to everyday wear.
LOOK 6: IZIQHAZA YAMI
“Iziqhaza” — traditional earrings worn as a symbol of pride and tribal identity — were the inspiration behind Look 6. At E_mania, we intentionally weave culture into every design, and this look is no exception.
Traditionally worn by Zulu men, iziqhaza represent pride, social status, and heritage. By reimagining this accessory alongside our signature print, we not only celebrate its meaning but also challenge cultural norms and expectations.
It’s fashion with a message—honoring tradition while making space for new narratives.

This look exemplifies how thoughtful graphic design and printing can seamlessly integrate cultural identity into modern streetwear. The white gym shorts and intricately printed T-shirt go beyond aesthetics; they are wearable narratives. Each element is crafted to normalise African design, making it accessible and relevant in daily life.

This look is a bold homage to African artistry—where modern tailoring meets ancestral memory.
Our easy-fit jumpsuit is centred around a striking African-inspired print that speaks to pride, heritage, and social status. Fitted through the body with a relaxed, flowing leg, it offers both structure and movement—perfectly balancing comfort and statement.

LOOK 9 – MARKED IN MEMORY
This fitted dress features a custom African-inspired line art print, reimagining the markings once traced across African bodies as symbols of identity and story. The hand-embroidered tapestry detailing on the face, accentuated with vibrant orange beading, evokes the precision and reverence of traditional craftsmanship. Elegant pleats at the shoulder nod to classical form, while the silky satin lining ensures comfort beneath the sculptural Barbie fabric. LOOK 10 – A CLOSING STATEMENT IN UNITY
Our final look was more than a garment—it was a declaration. A statement that as South Africans, we are intrinsically connected to the greater African continent.Rooted in the rich history of the kaftan, this piece draws inspiration from the traditional silhouettes worn across North and West Africa—symbols of regality, cultural pride, and continuity. Yet, what sets this garment apart is its print: a striking motif inspired by the ancient markings once found on African bodies. These markings—etched, painted, or scarred—were visual languages that told stories of identity, belonging, and passage.
