NAMHLA ZANDILE ZONDO is a self taught graphic designer, illustrator and visual storyteller based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her intention is to create visuals for brands that aim to be authentic while remaining true to their African roots. Her work highlights the importance of African representation.
The inspiration for my art piece, “UKUGELEZA KWENKULULEKO,” stems from the powerful narrative of Zulu women abducted and coerced into marriages against their will. I envisioned a striking portrayal of a bold African woman defying these oppressive forces. Central to the piece is the depiction of a strong woman, symbolizing resilience and determination. Her gaze is directed upwards, mirroring the act of swimming across a river, a metaphorical escape from the clutches of the abductors. The intricate details within the side profile reveal water-like patterns, embodying the motion of her journey through the fluid valleys.
The waves and currents within the artwork represent the challenges and hardships faced by Black women, particularly within the Zulu culture. The struggle for identity and the weight of oppression are vividly portrayed through the choice of colors. Black symbolizes Africanism, while red, orange, and yellow signify the passion and fervor inherent in resisting a predetermined fate.
Additionally, she incorporated bead-like patterns, characteristic of Nguni descent, to further emphasize the cultural heritage of the women being depicted. These patterns not only add depth and texture to the piece but also serve as a visual reminder of the rich traditions and history of the Nguni people. Incorporating line art flowers mimic the greenery of deep river beds which further adds a dynamic flow, emphasizing the theme of movement and transition.
